On March 25, 2023 at Herbst Theatre in San Francisco, Ninth Planet and InTandem will present the world premiere of Prospero's Island, a new chamber opera about power, deception and terrible secrets, by composer Allen Shearer and librettist Claudia Stevens. Stunning imagery of the Falkland Islands, richly orchestrated music and glorious singing by a stellar cast contribute to an unforgettable retelling of Shakespeare's great play, The Tempest. Audiences will meet the all-powerful Prospero, reimagined as a war criminal who, overcome by guilt, brings down an aircraft in order to turn himself in; paratrooper Andy and the lovely Mandy as they fall in love (but is it magic or true?); sullen, teenage Caliban, as he tussles with the island's cheeky penguins; the faithful Ariel, whose devotion to Prospero is put to the ultimate test. What will these newly imagined beings do when they learn the truth?

This fully staged Ninth Planet/InTandem co-production of Prospero's Island is Ninth Planet's first opera production. It will feature leading vocal artists, including Andrew Dwan as Prospero and Shawnette Sulker as Ariel. The chamber orchestra will comprise Ninth Planet and guests. Nathaniel Berman will conduct and Phil Lowery will direct this important premiere.
